Historic Hearing on Marijuana Legalization in the California Legislature
In an historic hearing Wednesday, the California legislature examined the pros and cons of marijuana legalization. The hearing marked the first time legalization has been discussed in the legislature since California banned marijuana in 1913.
Onlookers and media packed the hearing room for the three-hour session. Capitol employees had to hook up remote monitors in the hallway for the overflowing crowd of supporters and opponents of marijuana legalization.

Great article!!! Both sides present very good points. There will always be pro’s and con’s when such topics are debated. In some cases, those debating put their foot in their mouth,
“Next up were the cops, and there were no surprises there.”Marijuana radically diminishes our society,” said CPOA president John Standish. “Marijuana is a mind-altering addictive drug that robs you of memory, motivation, and concentration,” he said before Ammiano cut him short, noting that the purpose of the hearing was to discuss public safety and economic impacts of legalization, not to debate marijuana’s effects on health”
Safe to say alcohol does the same in many cases. A perfect example, a 45-year-old male caught traveling 140+ km/h with 4 children in the vehicle on a summers day long weekend just north of Toronto. Once pulled over, the man was asked to provide a roadside breathalyzer test. Which soon indicated the 45 year old Toronto man father of 4 was driving 40+km/h over the posted legal limit, suspended drivers license and with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit.
“Why would we want to legalize a substance known to cause cancer?”
As does smoking tobacco and consumption/abuse of alcohol, both legal all around the world.
Note: Bad example with regards to why Marijuana should not be legalized.
It will be interesting to see the outcome of these hearings. There is a long way to go, this won’t be over any time soon.
Be prepared, I am confident California will shock the world when this is all over. There are mountains to climb, but they will be conquered.
